My German Shepherds

My German Shepherds

A lot of you guys are thinking about moving to SW Florida and
some of you will bring their pet (s). I have 3 German Shepherds and 3 Cats
myself and I would like to share some tips with everyone.

Florida is sub tropic and with that there are a few things pet
owners need to know.

1) Heat: Specially in summer time it can get hot, pets need a
lot of water, shady places to go and should never stay in a parked car, not
even with the windows open. There are cooling vests available if you take your
dog for a longer hike or training.

2) Heart Worms: is a deadly disease which is being transferred
by mosquitoes. It is very important to have your pet on preventive medicine,
like heart guard, revolution or others http://www.placervillevet.com/canine%20heartworm.htm

3) Pythiosis: is a fungi like illness which is being transferred
to the pet through fresh water plants. Most dogs are immune against this
disease but some are not, Pythiosis is most of the time deadly for the animal.
There are tests and immunization available. http://www.pythiosis.com

4) Alligators, snakes and frogs. There are Alligators, snakes
and poisonous frogs in Florida. Most of the time they will leave you and your
pet alone. Best tip, “use common sense”.

5) Flees and Ticks are very common in Florida as well, good
preventive medication is always helpful. In choosing a tropical preventive
medication, your pet should be able to stay without those nasty parasites.

I thought everyone might want to know where to go with their dogs. Here is a list of Lee
County dog parks and beaches:

Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Quiet a few things happened since my last post. Unfortunately there is still oil coming out of the well into the Gulf. Even so that BP is pumping about 210,000 gallons per day into a tank ship at the surface and nobody knows how much oil really is getting into the Gulf every single day. However for Florida there are some good news. Florida and the Keys are in no immediate danger. Wind and current are steering the oil away from Florida and this should stay like this for at least the next 72 hours. BP is starting to pump drill mud into the well coming Tuesday and we all are hoping that this will stop new oil entering the Gulf of Mexico. The relief well will take until August to be completed and only the relief well can shut down the leaking well permanently.

Today I discovered a pretty good interactive map with a forecast of the oil spill;

I will keep on updating frequently.

Florida Gulf Coast and the Oil Spill

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Today my subject has nothing to do with Real Estate in SW Florida directly,  however with a concern all of us have. Since the Oil Rig exploded in front of Louisiana’s coasts a lot of people are very concerned what kind of influence this disaster will have for Florida, the beaches and the nature. Of course there are a lot of theories and different approaches. And a lot of questions. The media reporting about a catastrophic event, some others are reporting that it is terrible but the consequences would not be as bad as expected. I don’t know, but I do know that the Floridians are used in dealing with “emergencies” and know how to handle disaster situations. Thinking back to 2004 and Hurricane Charley, it was amazing how well every single resident helped cleaning up, not only their own homes, but also the neighbors, the neighborhoods and the communities. Almost nobody was sitting around waiting for somebody else to help, we all started helping each other. Today all help organisations, institutions, researches, fishermen and ”normal” people are ready and ready to go and clean animals, beaches and the water. Thousands of volunteers have signed up already, information fliers are being handed out, in how to deal with stranded animals, watch out for bird nests on the beach and stay save. We will have our beaches back in no time – if needed. We did it after Hurricane Charley and we will do it again.

Tonight on the news they reported, that Florida might be lucky and that we would only feel minimal damages. I have done some researches and I think I found very good and hopefully acurate information.  Please click on the following links for more information.
